Using up a box of contact lenses in a matter of months may bother environmentally conscious consumers. The word “disposable” seldom conjures images of otters at play in fresh, clean streams. But with the introduction of silicone hydrogels in 1999, contact lenses have become extremely biodegradable. In fact, the use of silicone hydrogels has made it possible to manufacture and market disposable contact lenses.

The choice for people with sensitive eyes boils down to choosing between cost and quality. Investing in a gas-permeable pair of contact lenses that delivers the optimum amount of oxygen and moisture to the eye costs significantly more than conventional soft contacts. Opting for higher quality lens costs more. But one option few people with sensitive eyes consider is disposable contact lenses.

Dispose of Rather Than Clean

Disposable contacts give people pause. The unfortunate perception is that disposable lenses are somehow wasteful or irresponsible, indeed the term “disposable” is not one that most consumers are comfortable with. The fact of the matter is, however, that disposable lenses are highly biodegradable and inexpensive to manufacture. Indeed the carbon footprint involved in producing and distilling cleaning solutions are far larger than those involved with disposable contact lenses.

The Most Comfortable Contacts

Contact lenses are far more comfortable than glasses and they allow wearers to lead far more active lifestyles. The only major drawback to contact lenses is keeping them clean.
