Seasons pass, the days wind down, and the years accumulate. Time stops for no man. It is inevitable and we march on towards our fate always somehow three steps ahead of ourselves. The moment is never enough as we are constantly striving to plan, pressure and cajole a brighter future for ourselves. It seems one of the tenants of Zen Buddhism may have it right when it claims now is all we ever have.

Being in the moment is crucial. But even if we were to embrace the moment, it is the small tells that let us know about times passage. Our bodies know the present very well — our minds may well be elsewhere, but our bodies are keenly aware of decrepitude. As the fourth and fifth decades come to fruition, one of the most common irritations in the blurring of vision.

The Greek and Latin word, presbyopia, carries with it a gloomy connotation. It smacks of serious complications. But the word simply translates as “old man eyes.” It is an adequate, if not sexist, description of the condition. Though this is not a serious condition, it is a very vexing one. There is nothing more irritating than having to hold a menu at arm’s length in a dim restaurant.

As Robert Plant put it: there two paths you can go by. The first is investing in a pair of bifocals or reading glasses. This will require some substantial trial and error phases as a pair of stylish reading glasses are few and far between. Indeed, even if you find a stylish pair, wearing them is as good as standing and proclaiming the march of time. A far more discrete solution is buying a pair of multifocal contact lenses. Like conventional contacts, multifocal lenses cover the entire iris, but whereas regular contacts affect your entire scope of vision, multifocal lenses will only bring items toward the bottom of your vision into focus.

Multifocal contact lenses are highly customized, requiring an appointment with a licensed optometrist. Once fitted, you can wear them all day, like normal contacts. They will have to be cleaned and soaked like normal contacts as well, though it is possible to have daily disposable multifocal lenses ordered on your behalf. Furthermore, like all soft-contact lenses, multifocal contact lenses are made from oxygen-permeable materials that allow the iris o receive vital oxygen.

The telltale signs are so slight, so imperceptible you may think nothing of it. It is the slow, steady blurring of the fine print that is a sure sign you have passed over into a new reality, a new phase. Welcome to presbyopia. As middle age progresses towards upper-middle-age, you may begin to notice that irritating blurring and begin to conjecture a more serious condition than the one actually affecting you.

Essentially, this is a case of age-related farsightedness. Though hardly a serious condition, it can seriously hamper your reading and dining enjoyment. Most people who suffer are still very active and involved in sports and social activities. Hiking, biking, climbing will not be affected. The only problem is when the lights are low and there is small print to read.

Currently, there are two possible treatments for presbyopia. The first and most common is investing in a stylish pair of bifocals. This can be problematic, as most people hate the idea of brandishing a pair of bifocals to read a menu or the newspaper. The second, and far more discrete treatment for presbyopia is being fit for a pair of multifocal contact lenses.

These prescription lenses are designed to fit the shape of your eye, providing the same benefits as a pair of glasses. They are designed in such a manner as to allow the wearer smooth transitions from regular vision to reading. Most multifocal contact lenses are made of gas-permeable materials that allow oxygen to reach the eye while resisting debris and the accumulation of irritating proteins.

In summation, ailments like presbyopia are easily treated with simple solutions. Whether you decide on a pair of cumbersome reading glasses or light-as-air multifocal lenses, the menu will become easier and easier to read. The days of eye strain will be a thing of the past. Though getting older is inevitable and is not without its quick fixes.

Sunglasses, also commonly referred to as “shades” are dark tinted glasses used to help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and help facilitate your vision in bright sunlight. Many people use sunglasses when outside in the sun, whether they are driving, bicycling, walking, jogging or lounging at the beach. Nowadays, there are thousands of styles, colors and brands of shades to choose from. If you are shopping for a new pair, make sure you verify that they provide adequate UV ray protection for your eyes.

Sunglasses are also viewed as an accessory, and many people use them as a fashion statement to accent their personal style. Many fashion designers, from the everyday to the high-end style houses also design sunglasses under their respective brands. It is not uncommon to see designer sunglasses on celebrities, socialites, or even average people walking around on the street.

Designer shades can accent your personal style and protect your eyes from the sun. Popular brand names include Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Prada, Chanel and Hermes among others. Prices for these fashion statements can range anywhere from $50 to thousands of dollars. Whether you spend only fifty dollars or over five hundred dollars, your designer sunglasses are an investment that you will want to protect.

Protect Your Investment In order to protect your shades properly, you must take care not to let them get any scratches on the lenses or the surface of the frames. To do this, make sure you only place them on soft surfaces. If a case is not included in your purchase, invest in a hard case that snaps shut where you can store your sunglasses when you arent using them. Also, make sure you learn how to clean your sunglasses properly and carefully. The guide below will help you.

Clean Your Sunglasses The first step to keeping your sunglasses clean is to make sure they are properly stored when you are not wearing them. If you leave your designer glasses on a table or shelf, they are likely to need more frequent cleaning as they will gather dust there. If you toss your shades into your purse without properly storing them in a case, they are likely to gather dust and debris as well. Keeping your glasses in a case will help prevent the need for frequent cleanings, thus keeping them new-looking and scratch-free.

When it is time to clean your designer shades, make sure you use clean water and a bit of soap. Even using just water is okay, but do not, under any circumstances, wipe your designer sunglasses down when they are dry. Wiping your shades without at least moistening them first can cause scratches and damage to your lenses or frames.

Make sure you are not using a regular towel, tissue or cloth when cleaning your sunglasses. Coming into contact with the wrong type of textile can easily scratch or damage your expensive shades. Instead, use a very soft cotton cloth, such as a chamois, in order to protect your glasses. Another option is to invest in a soft optical cloth to clean your glasses safely and properly.

These days, sunglass care and cleaning kits are available at eyewear boutiques or department stores. Try asking the retailer that sold you your sunglasses if they sell any such kits. Generally a sunglasses cleaning kit will include a small bottle of cleaning solution that is safe and effective for use on expensive shades, a soft cloth made of cotton or microfiber, and a carrying case. If the kits sold at your local retailer seem pricey, simply shop around online for a better deal.

A daily care routine is an essential part of owning Acuvue Oasys contact lenses. There are a few basic care needs that one should be aware before using these contact lenses. If you are unable to follow a routine, unable to insert and remove the lenses, or have another person insert and remove the lenses, then it would be wise to rethink the need or desire for contact lenses. If you are great at a routine then there are a few basics you will need to follow.

Before you go home for the first time with contact lenses, make sure you insert and remove them while you are still at the Optometrist or eye care specialists office as this will help clear up any questions. Before handling the lenses make sure your hands are washed and dried thoroughly. A common mistake that can be made is putting the lens in your mouth to lubricate or moisten it, or using tap water to clean or moisten the lens. Unfortunately, this could lead to accidentally swallowing the lens or dropping it into the sink drain. Also, tap water contains impurities that can contaminate the lens or could lead to eye infections, possibly even injuring the eye.

The first time you purchase a pair of lenses, be sure to get a recommended cleaning and disinfection routine as well as instructions about care, handling, and cleaning. The eye care specialist will be able to teach you about proper care procedures and will suggest the best products to use for the type of lenses you have. When you remove your lenses, they must be cleaned and disinfected before you put them back in your eyes.

In order to continue safe and comfortable wear of the lenses, it is important that you first clean, rinse, and disinfect your lenses after each removal. Be sure to do this by using the lens care products and procedures that have been originally recommended by your eye care specialist. Ideally, it is best to form the habit of cleaning of the lenses as soon as they are removed from your eyes. Cleaning and rinsing are needed to remove mucus, secretions, films and protein deposits that may have built up on your lenses during wear.

Always follow the set routine and use the recommended products to avoid any serious eye problems. If you wish to change products for some reason, it is highly recommended to consult with your eye care specialist about the product before doing so. There may be many reasons why you should not or cannot safely use the new product. Also, keep track of expiry dates on lenses and all the lens care products. Do not mix lens care systems with other products because not all products will be compatible with others.

Basic Cleaning Rules

- Always clean the same lens first to avoid mix-ups when the time comes to insert them again. - Always follow the instructions provided on the cleaning solution label and from the eye care specialist. - After the cleaning is completed, rinse the lens with the recommended rinsing solution to remove the cleaning solution as well as any mucus and film from the lens surface. - Once the process is completed, put the lens into the correct chamber of your lens storage case.

Disinfecting

- After the cleaning is completed, disinfect the lenses using the system recommended by your eye care specialist, following the instructions given and /or written on the product label. - When using hydrogen peroxide lens care systems, the lenses must first be neutralized before wearing. - Be sure to thoroughly rinse the lenses with a fresh solution before inserting and wearing your lenses. Take caution with lenses that are chemically disinfected, as they could absorb ingredients found in the solution. These chemicals could irritate the eye, so to avoid this, thoroughly rinse the lenses in a fresh and sterile saline solution just before inserting the lens in the eye.

Proper care of your Acuvue Oasys contact lens is a necessary responsibility. Cleaning is an important part of lens care. Improper cleaning can eventually ruin the lenses. To maintain fresh lenses, they must be cleaned, rinsed, and disinfected daily.

by A. Nutt

If you wear glasses or have recently been diagnosed with a vision problem (such as astigmatism, myopia, presbyopia or something else) that requires corrective lenses, you may be considering using contact lenses.

Contact lenses are a great alternative to glasses and are popular with many people because of the comfort that freedom from bulky frames they provide. Many people also like the increased peripheral vision they enjoy as a result of the contact lenses moving with their eyes in any given direction. There are many different types of contact lenses. Some of these include soft contact lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses, daily wear lenses, extended wear contacts, colored contact lenses and more. Your eye care professional will work with you to ensure that you get the pair of contact lenses that are best for your eyes and your lifestyle. He or she will also go over the basics of inserting, removing, and caring for your contacts. If you familiarize yourself with the process of inserting your contact lenses properly before visiting your eye doctor, you will be armed with questions and may even impress your doctor!

Prepare to Insert Your Lenses The absolute most important thing about wearing contact lenses is being clean and hygienic about it. If you stray from this rule even a little bit you are opening yourself up to possible eye infection and damage. For this reason, you must wash your hands thoroughly with hot water and soap before you begin to prepare your contact lenses for insertion. After washing, dry your hands with a lint-free towel. Make sure to avoid contact with lotions or cosmetics between washing your hands and handling your lenses.

Opening the Contact Lens Package Many contact lenses will come in whats called a “multipack.” Look for the opening flap on the front of the multipack and pull it in order to break the seal. Inside you will find six individually packaged lenses. The lenses are packaged this way to ensure maximum sterility for each lens. While there may be some slight variation in how lenses are packaged from manufacturer to manufacturer, the instructions below will help you open up your contact lens package properly.

Shake an individual lens package gently and check if you can see the contact lenses floating in the enclosed solution. Next, peel back the foil covering carefully to reveal the lens. You can stabilize the lens package by placing it on a flat surface (such as your bathroom counter) in order to avoid splashing. Sometimes, a lens will adhere itself to the foil covering when opened. This will not affect the sterility of your lens.

Handling the Lenses Try to get used to handling the same lens first (right or left) every time so that you develop a habit and dont get mixed up. Remove the lens from the pack or from its storage case and examine it to ensure that it is clean and free of debris or tears. If you notice any damage on the lens, do not use it. Confirm that the lens is not turned inside out by placing it on your forefinger and looking at its profile. The lens should look like a bowl. If the lens edges point outwards, it is inside out.

Placing the Lens in Your Eye Once you have verified that the lens on your forefinger is not inside out, use the middle finger from that same hand to both steady your hand and pull down your lower lid gently. Using your other hand, lift your upper lid. Center the lens and gently place it on your eye. Release your eyelids and blink. The lens will automatically center itself.

Contemporary contact lenses are comfy, long-term (unless by purpose, as in disposables) and very safe. Yet, there are some perils and limitations in wearing them and knowing what those are can assist you select the type that’s best for you. Of course, any such conclusion should be made in consultation with your eye care pro.

Since 1986 many have preferred for Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses. Popular designs provide for up to five times more oxygen diffusion through the plastic than those of the past. That feature is essential in minimise the odds of corneal infection. The less oxygen that makes it to the eye, the higher the odds of an infection.

On the downside, RGP lenses are a little less variable than other types, making them less comfy for some. But, they may be best for correcting astigmatism as a effect. They also can last up to 2-3 years, which is longer than typical soft contact lenses.

Some will want some type of soft lens, made from special hydrophilic plastic polymers that offer a lens that is flexible and thus more comfortable. Latest manufacturing proficiencies make achievable a lens that doesn’t suffer from a high likeliness of tearing, as did those in early decades, but they do require more frequent substitute. Soft lenses also stay in place highly well and require a shorter adjustment period.

Yet, for many, a hard lens is still the only option. While often less comfy, and even though they raise the odds of marking or infection slightly, their inflexibleness is essential. The eyes of some patients plainly require the rigidity of this type and they prefer not to fall back on glasses. Those with particular types of astigmatism may not be able to wear soft lenses and demand these instead.

Beyond those categories there are still different options.

Daily wear contacts are intended to be worn during the day, then removed before bed. They’re used by about 80% of contact lens wearers. Here the pros and cons get more plain. It can be a limited hassle to insert and remove contact lenses every day. Whenever they’re removed they have to be sterilized, usually overnight, before re-inserting the next morning.

But daily wear contacts (currently) provide the easiest possible option for those searching to achieve the absolute minimum hazard of eye infection and scarring. Providing the eye to relax and get exposed to air keeps it in the best health. All contacts today cut oxygen exposure somewhat and commonly well below the level the eye would receive without them.

Removing them at night also reduces the odds to zero of getting the contact slip off the cornea during sleep, where it could be a pain (literally and figuratively) to recover in the morning.

Still, touching the eye and/or the contact is also not entirely without risk, and the action is a little inconvenient. Less changes can also be healthy. For those whose physicians say it’s safe, extended wear contacts are a good selection. They’re fashioned to be worn anywhere from overnight (2 days) to a week or even up to a month at a time, depending on the design and the patient.

That convenience component comes at a price, in dollars and risk.

They tend to be more expensive though costs vary over time, of course, usually falling from a high. They also reduce the air-eye contact, which ups the odds of infection slightly. Extended wear lenses also up the odds somewhat of something going wrong, since they sit in the eye longer.

Some models, especially the 30-day type, are somewhat stiffer and consequently slimly less comfy. In every case, the odds of troubles with current contact lens models is still quite low for those people whose eyes allow long-term wearing.

Investigate the options in consultation with your eye care professional and you’ll soon find the right pair of contact lenses for you.

A healthy life style is a prerequisite if you wish to maintain the quality of your eye sight. Everything these days, is healthy this, or healthy that, but as far as your eyes are concerned, it is necessary. Once you lose your eyes they are gone forever. Science has made leaps and bounds in terms of reversing and even curing some eye diseases, that a few years ago would have left a person blind, but that said, the responsibility still lies with the individual to maintain the quality of their own eye health.

When we say maintain a healthy lifestyle we mean as part of that, your diet. These are just some of what should be part of your everyday diet and plenty of them. Fresh fruit, green leafy vegetables, fish oils, carrots, liver and nuts. When fresh foods are not as readily available they can be substituted with minerals and vitamins, such as vitamin A, but fresh is better.

It goes without saying, that you must have regular eye check ups. Not to get too whimsical but as they say ” the eyes are the windows to the soul” or something like that anyway. But it can be true that eye check ups can lead to the discovery of illness before it gets to much of a head start on you.

Why not look around for some eye care health plans. This kind of treatment and paying for eye accessories does not come cheap. What does these days? The right kind of plan will reimburse you for any kind of eye health issues that you may have as well as such things as eye exams, glasses and contact lenses.

No eye care health plan will pay all of the costs involved, but it will cover a large proportion of it.

The way your plan operates depends on which method you have chosen. One way is to pay for the eye care treatment yourself and then reclaim an amount back from the policy.

Providing the treatment you have was covered under your policy, you should receive the refund you are entitled to under the premiums that you set up. Bear in mind also, that the policy may insist that you use particular eye care health specialists.

A benefits package works like regular health insurance. It is designed to cover treatments and examinations related to your visual health. For example, if you purchase eye care products, or see an eye doctor, the plan will most likely pay on your behalf. As with regular health insurance, you may also be subject to monthly premiums.

Even if your eye health is fairly good now, it will be to your advantage to have an eye care plan that covers you and your family. Aside from reducing the chance of having to deal with prior condition exclusions, you will also save a good bit of money.

As soon as you begin a plan there is immediate benefit of up to 50% from eye care accessories, depending on your plan, as well as the free check ups and treatments. Going online is a great way to find the best health care plans for you and yours.

Contact lenses are a great alternative to prescription eyeglasses for many people. They are small, curved lenses that fit right over your eye and provide vision correction for common vision problems such as astigmatism, myopia, presbyopia and more. One of the greatest benefits of contact lenses over eyeglasses is that it frees one from having to wear bulky eyeglass frames on their face. Many active people such as those who spend much time outdoors or participate in sports appreciate the freedom from frames very much.

While contact lenses can turn out to be much more comfortable in the long run than prescription eyeglasses, there is a period of adjustment in the beginning. Before you are used to your contact lenses and are familiar with how they feel, you may question whether your contacts fit properly or if they are in properly. This guide will help you determine how to evaluate if your contact lenses fit as they should and will also provide some general tips on contact lens insertion.

At the Eye Doctor’s Office

When your eye care professional diagnoses you with a vision problem that requires correction, you will discuss eyeglasses versus contact lenses and you may decide you prefer to try contact lenses. Your eye doctor will go over the several types of contact lenses available and may ask you several questions about your lifestyle in order to help determine which type of contact lenses will be best for you. Next, your optician will measure the surface of your eye in order to determine its curvature. He or she will determine key measurements with an instrument called a keratometer. Because everyone’s eyes have different shapes, sizes and levels of curvature, your eye doctor may use a computer to further measure certain aspects of the surface of your eyes. This may take several minutes, but try to be patient and helpful as it is crucial to have proper measurements if your contact lenses are to fit correctly.

After all measurements are taken, your eye doctor will have a good idea of exactly which size and curve your contact lenses should be. He or she will hopefully have a pair of contact lenses to fit your size and prescription right in their office so that they can help you insert them for the time and go over the fit with you. Another good reason for trying on your first pair of contact lenses at the optician’s office is that they can use a biomicroscope to help judge the fit of the lenses. It will generally take 10 to 15 minutes for the contact lens to settle into your eye, but after that, the doctor will look for any signs indicating that the lens is not a perfect fit. Some of the things he or she will look for are:

- Lenses that are too flat or too steep for your eyes can cause damage to your cornea and should be carefully avoided. These will generally cause great discomfort, so you will definitely know something is wrong if this is the case. - Shifting of the contact lens off your eye and onto the whites of your eyes. Generally this would indicate that you might need a slightly different size.

Putting in Your Contact Lenses

To wear your contacts correctly and ensure the proper fit, follow these tips - Always wash and dry your hands first - Place the lens on the tip of your index finger, ensuring it’s rightside-up - Hold your upper eye lid open with your other hand - Gently place the lens on your eye as you stare straight into a mirror - Release your eyelids and blink gently
